about homestead caucasian mountain dogs yaak montanaWe are lucky enough to live in rural Montana where the woods are still wild. Grizzlies, black bears, wolves, coyotes and cougars are common in our area. We commonly see sign of these predators around our farm. Occasionally, the perimeter is breached (usually by grizzlies) but, thanks to the dogs, our livestock and children stay safe. Homesteading in such and area can be a real challenge, and our Ovcharkas have literally “saved our bacon” many times. Not only are they an asset to us, but they also benefit the wildlife that might otherwise become problem animals requiring relocation or euthanasia. These amazing dogs are a testament to courage, loyalty, and unstoppable power.

While these dogs have many uses and benefits, we are using them in a way similar to their historical purpose. While the times have changed, many people in western cultures find a living in the wildland urban interface. Basically, many people live in the transition zone between the wilderness and civilization. This overlap between humans and wildlife can create a conflict. We have found that our dogs have greatly alleviated that problem on our farm. It seems that this breed strikes a good balance between guarding and companionship. They love to work but they very much appreciate affection.

Our dogs are all working dogs and are part of our family. Our initial goal with these dogs is to provide protection and companionship for our farm and family. Over time, we have expanded our kennel in order to create an opportunity to share our experience with others. It is important to us to maintain a small farm and family oriented operation in order to ensure the health and happiness of our dogs. The reputation of this breed as a whole is very important. In support of that, it is necessary to provide healthy puppies to others who can benefit from the wonderful and impressive qualities of this breed.
